Getting There: SIR + Staten Island Ferry

Todt Hill is a hilly, wooded neighborhood beside the Staten Island Greenbelt, and it has no railway station of its own. That adds a first step most other Staten Island patients skip: getting down the hill to the Staten Island Railway. After that the route is the familiar one, train to St. George, ferry to Whitehall, then subway or bus. With the drive or bus to the station included, the trip is roughly 1 to 1.5 hours. Check MTA service alerts before leaving, since weekend track work can change the railway schedule.

Step 1 – SIR from Todt Hill to St. George

The closest SIR stops are Dongan Hills and Old Town, both at the eastern foot of the hill. Most patients get a ride or take a local bus down Todt Hill Road; allow about 10 to 15 minutes for that. From either station, a northbound train reaches St. George in about 20 minutes, stopping at Grasmere, Clifton and Stapleton on the way. Trains are usually timed so you can make the connecting ferry.

Step 2 – Staten Island Ferry to Whitehall

The ferry leaves from the St. George terminal right next to the railway platforms, so the transfer is a short indoor walk. The ride costs nothing and lasts about 25 minutes. Departures are frequent during commuting hours and thin out later in the evening. Many Todt Hill residents who work in Lower Manhattan already know this crossing well, which makes it easy to fit a checkup into an ordinary workday.

Step 3 – Subway or Bus to 75 Catherine St

Whitehall Terminal is a few minutes on foot from Bowling Green, where the 4 and 5 trains run uptown. Get off at Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall, the second stop, and walk east through Chatham Square to Catherine Street, about 10 to 15 minutes. If you are carrying bags or would rather stay above ground, a bus like the M15 runs from the ferry area toward the East Side near the clinic.

Why Staten Island Patients Make the Trip

Honestly, Todt Hill has good medical care nearby, so we only suggest the trip when it makes sense. For professionals who ride the ferry to offices in the Financial District, our clinic can be closer to their weekday routine than a practice on the island. Families who speak Chinese or Spanish at home value a care team that shares those languages. Same-day appointments are held back each weekday for urgent but non-emergency problems. We also accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, which covers many parents and grandparents living in the same household.

Services Available

Busy commuters from Todt Hill often plan one thorough visit a year rather than several short ones. Our comprehensive health assessments bundle a full history, exam and lab work into a single appointment. Men who have put off checkups can book men's health visits covering blood pressure, cholesterol and age-appropriate screening. For ongoing conditions like diabetes or asthma, chronic disease management at Catherine Street combines regular follow-ups with telephone check-ins between trips. Learn more on our Chinatown, Manhattan clinic page.

Insurance Accepted

We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. Many Todt Hill households are covered through an employer, and those commercial plans vary widely in which Manhattan practices they include. Before your first visit, call the clinic and read us the plan name and member ID from your card so we can verify coverage and any copay. If your plan needs a referral or prior authorization for tests, our staff will explain the steps. Patients paying out of pocket can ask for self-pay information over the phone.
