Getting There: SIR + Staten Island Ferry

Great Kills sits near the southern end of the railway, so this is one of the longer rides we ask patients to make, and we would rather say so up front. The whole trip is doable without driving: the Staten Island Railway, the ferry, then a short subway or bus hop in Lower Manhattan. Most riders should budget about 1.5 hours each way. Service changes on nights and weekends, so a quick look at the MTA app or website or the ferry schedule before you leave will save you a long wait at St. George.

Step 1 – SIR from Great Kills to St. George

Great Kills station is off Giffords Lane, a short walk or drive from Hylan Boulevard. Take any train toward St. George; it stops at Bay Terrace, Oakwood Heights, New Dorp and the East Shore stations before reaching the ferry terminal in about 35 minutes. Tap in with OMNY. If you park near the station, leave a few minutes to find a spot on weekday mornings.

Step 2 – Staten Island Ferry to Whitehall

At St. George, head up to the terminal level and into the ferry waiting room. The crossing to Whitehall Terminal is free, takes about 25 minutes and runs day and night. Boats leave most often during the morning and evening commutes. It is a calm ride for older patients, with plenty of indoor seating and restrooms on board, and the Lower Manhattan skyline comes into view as you approach.

Step 3 – Subway or Bus to 75 Catherine St

Leaving Whitehall, the simplest subway option is the 4 or 5 from nearby Bowling Green, riding to Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall. From there it is roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk east past Chatham Square to the clinic. Patients who find stairs or crowds tiring can take a bus, such as the M15, from the ferry area instead, or split a short cab ride from the terminal.

Why Staten Island Patients Make the Trip

A 90-minute trip is not for everyone, and many Great Kills residents are well served closer to home. Those who do come to us tend to have specific, practical reasons for it. Some are Chinese-speaking or Spanish-speaking families who want a care team that can explain results without an interpreter. Others work in the Financial District and ride the ferry anyway, so an appointment before or after a shift costs them little extra time. Same-day appointments are held back each weekday, which helps when a fever or infection cannot wait, and we accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare.

Services Available

Everything happens under one roof at Catherine Street, which helps when the journey is long. Retirees from the Great Kills area often use our senior primary care for medication reviews, fall-risk checks and managing several conditions at once. We draw blood and run routine diagnostic testing such as lab panels and EKGs during the same visit, so a second trip across the harbor is less likely. Women can schedule well-woman and gynecologic primary care, with referrals for mammograms and other imaging. Hours, directions and other details on the clinic itself are on our Chinatown, Manhattan location page.

Insurance Accepted

We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, and many Great Kills patients on Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan use their coverage with us. Plan networks can differ between boroughs, so a plan that works at a South Shore practice is not always in network in Manhattan. The quickest way to check is to call the clinic with your insurance card in hand before booking. Our front desk can also explain what a visit may cost if you are between plans or paying yourself, and they will note any referral your plan requires.
