Getting There: SIR + Staten Island Ferry

Of all the Staten Island neighborhoods we hear from, Grasmere has one of the shorter rides to the boat. The quiet streets around Brady's Pond and Clove Road are only a handful of stations south of St. George, so most of the travel time is spent on the water and in Manhattan rather than on the train. Expect about 1 to 1.25 hours door to door on a typical weekday, and closer to 1.5 hours if you just miss a ferry. Here is how the trip breaks down, leg by leg, for a first visit.

Step 1 – SIR from Grasmere to St. George

The Grasmere station sits beside the Staten Island Expressway near Clove Road. Take any train marked for St. George; the ride passes Clifton, Stapleton and Tompkinsville and takes roughly 10 to 12 minutes. You pay the SIR fare with OMNY or a MetroCard at the St. George end, not at Grasmere. Because the train leg is short, leaving home about 15 minutes before a ferry departure is usually enough.

Step 2 – Staten Island Ferry to Whitehall

Walk from the platform straight into the St. George ferry terminal. There is no charge for the ferry, and the crossing to Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan runs about 25 minutes. Departures come roughly every 15 to 30 minutes depending on the hour, so it pays to glance at the schedule before leaving Grasmere. Some riders use the crossing to review a medication list.

Step 3 – Subway or Bus to 75 Catherine St

At Whitehall, the R and W trains leave from the station right outside the terminal; ride to City Hall, then walk east along Chambers Street and Park Row to Chatham Square and Catherine St, about 15 minutes. If you prefer to avoid stairs, the M15 bus heads north from the ferry along Water Street toward St. James Place, near the clinic. Either way, allow about 20 to 25 minutes.

Why Staten Island Patients Make the Trip

Plenty of good doctors practice on Staten Island, and we would never claim otherwise. Grasmere patients who come to Catherine St usually mention language first: our Chinatown care team speaks English, Chinese and Spanish, so relatives can join the conversation without an interpreter. Timing is the second reason. Same-day appointments are held back each weekday, and a resident who already takes the ferry to a downtown job can often be seen at lunch or right after work. Coverage matters too, since we accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare. If none of these apply to you, a nearer practice may serve you better.

Services Available

Because the ride from Grasmere is manageable, some patients plan a longer visit that covers several needs at once. A comprehensive health assessment reviews your history, vital signs and risk factors in one appointment. Blood work and other diagnostic testing ordered by your doctor can be collected during the same trip, with results reviewed at a follow-up. For older adults, our senior primary care services focus on medication reviews, fall risk and managing more than one condition. Imaging and specialist care are handled by referral, and we are happy to coordinate with specialists on Staten Island if that is easier for you.

Insurance Accepted

Most major insurance plans are accepted at the Chinatown clinic, including Medicaid and Medicare. Plan networks differ, so before booking your first visit, phone (917) 304-0445 with your member ID and our staff will check whether City Prime Care is in network for you. Grasmere families on managed Medicaid plans should ask specifically about their plan, since some assign members to a named primary care doctor that may need to be changed. Patients without coverage can ask about self-pay rates. Please bring your card and a photo ID each time, and let us know promptly if your plan changes during the year.
