Primary Care at Our Chinatown Clinic

Catherine Street is the Manhattan home of City Prime Care. For primary care, Chinatown residents, families from Two Bridges and the Lower East Side, and office workers from the Financial District and South Street Seaport all come to the same exam rooms, a few blocks from the Manhattan Bridge. Many of our patients are older adults who have lived around East Broadway and Madison Street for decades and prefer to speak with their doctor in Chinese. Others are younger families in Knickerbocker Village or staff from the courthouses near Foley Square fitting a visit into a lunch break. The Chinatown clinic page has photos and directions; below, you will find what is particular to seeing a provider here.

What to Expect at Your Visit

The front desk can help with forms in English, Chinese or Spanish, so paperwork is not a barrier. A medical assistant checks your vitals and reviews your medicines; bring the actual bottles, including herbal remedies or anything bought overseas, so nothing gets missed. Your provider then listens to your concerns, examines you and explains the plan in plain language. Blood for routine lab work can often be drawn during the same visit, and results are reviewed with you by phone or at a follow-up. When you need imaging, a specialist or a screening we do not perform on site, we arrange the referral and help with the paperwork.

Why Patients in Chinatown Choose Us

Language is often the first reason families call. Explaining dizziness, chest tightness or a side effect in Chinese, without asking a grandchild to translate, changes the quality of the conversation. Convenience matters as well: the office is steps from Chatham Square, so an appointment fits between a morning at the Mott Street markets and afternoon errands. Patients also value continuity, meaning a provider who remembers your history and your family over the years. Some Staten Island patients make the trip too, since the ferry lands only a short subway ride away and a visit here can come sooner than waiting for an opening closer to home.

Conditions We Treat

Our Chinatown providers look after the everyday and long-term problems that bring adults to a family doctor, including:

  • High blood pressure and high cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes
  • Colds, flu, sore throats, and sinus or ear infections
  • Back, knee and shoulder pain
  • Asthma and seasonal allergies
  • Heartburn, stomach upset and constipation
  • Rashes and minor skin infections
  • Poor sleep, stress and low mood

If you were born in China or elsewhere in East Asia, ask about hepatitis B testing; guidelines recommend screening adults from regions where the infection is more common. The full scope of care is described on our primary care services page.
